Within my current role I am responsible for some of the wider student support areas including the tutorial & enrichment programmes, careers guidance, admissions, and marketing. I see my role as an opportunity to contribute to a positive and supportive experience for our students outside of their main area of learning.
Over the years the College has provided me with so many opportunities to develop myself professionally as well as allowing me to work with a rich and diverse group of people I would call friends as well as colleagues.
The Further Education sector is here to offer you many positive challenges and opportunities and will ensure that no working day is ever the same again!

I joined Harlow College in 1992 after I came back from working in the Middle East. I love what I do as I'm able to make an impact in people's lives and influence society positively. I've been able to use my transferable skills and customer service knowledge to support students who might be experiencing difficulties.
I work with a wonderful team who are really proactive and positive; they match my core values. The role is challenging at times but knowing I have their back up and support helps. No day is ever the same, and I can truly say that it's a varied, interesting and totally fulfilling role that I have.
I have worked in many varied roles since first starting as a part-time lecturer, and if anyone had told me back then that I would end up in part of the college Executive , I wouldn't have believed them. The college has supported me with opportunities and ongoing training. In my different management roles I've now also been able to nurture, develop and support others in their career like the college has done with me.
So, my question for you is, if Harlow College has developed my career like it has, what could it do for you?

Come back soon for information about me!
I am currently Chair of the Corporation, a role that I have held since October 2020. Before this I was Vice-Chair of the Corporation and Chair of the Standards and Curriculum Committee. I worked in the FE sector for over 30 years including over 10 years at senior management level mainly in curriculum development and quality improvement. I was also an Ofsted additional inspector for the sector concentrating mainly on the quality of provision, leadership and management and safeguarding.
I am passionate about the FE sector as this is the sector that enables young people to develop skills and careers and gives adults that second or third chance to do the same. These are key values of Harlow college. I am proud to be a member of the Harlow college board and represent, at board level, both the hardworking staff who are providing first class teaching, support and facilities and the students who are fantastic ambassadors for the college.
Retired I now have the time and opportunity to use my experiences with the College as well as spending precious time with three grandchildren and pretending to keep fit!
I have volunteered as a governor at the College (where my two daughters studied) since October 2020 and currently fulfil the following roles:
I am in full time employment with Interpath Ltd, a financial advisory business, where I am an associate director working in the restructuring part of the business. I specialise in legal entity rationalisation and corporate simplification projects and have worked in financial advisory for 38 years.
My main hobbies and interests are yoga and getting out in the fresh air running, going on long walks, and cycling (I am a keen member of Harlow Cycling Club).
I joined the board of Harlow College in 2018 and am the Vice Chair. I have also been chair of the Search Committee since October, 2022 and was the chair of the Quality and Standards Committee from 2018 - 2022.
I was born and educated in Shanghai, and worked as a teacher and manager having outstanding success which led to my arrival in the UK in 2005, in a post initially funded by The British Council and subsequently by Essex County Council, to build education partnerships between Essex and Jiangsu Province, China.
I then went on to work for Edison Learning where I worked as Business Development Manager for China and Vice President at a joint venture with Wake Forest University, before joining Excellence First Enterprise Consultancy (EFEC) full time in 2013. Meanwhile I have also gained a master's degree from Cambridge University.
I am CEO of EFEC, leading its development by building on its success in creating UK - China education collaboration, to the wider field of partnerships for growth in business, innovation, skills and careers. My business focus means that I am particularly keen on the relationships the college can develop with employers to enhance the part Harlow can play in the 'Innovation Corridor' as a key hub for industry between Cambridge and London.
You may think the construction industry is dominated by men but we talked to two inspiring women making their impression on the industry. Melanie is a Level 2 Carpentry student and former Senior Architectural Designer Rain is Assistant Academy Manager for our T Level Construction course.
Melanie, aged 17
Level 2 Carpentry & Joinery at Harlow College
My interest began when I was younger and used to help my dad with DIY around the house. I always thought it was great fun. I love the idea that one day I will create a building from scratch and walk past it and think I've built that!
Right now, all I want to do is be on site and get stuck in with the build. I would love to get loads of different trade skills under my belt, like joinery and bricklaying. My next step is to move onto an Apprenticeship to get some onsite experience. In 10 years time I know I'll still be onsite doing what I love.
At first it was my dad who inspired me. Since starting College my tutors have been amazing. They have been fantastic at motivating me and pushing me to develop my skills. They have given me great career advice and encouraged me to progress from Level 1 to Level 2 Carpentry and I'm so glad I took their advice.
Just do it, because you are never going to know until you try! You may have doubts about whether you can physically do it because it is demanding. I did think the boys were going to be better at it, but they aren't! The physical side is fine and I'm doing well.
If you've got doubts like I had, take it from me, you'll probably never encounter them.
Just do it, because you are never going to know until you try! You may have doubts about whether you can physically do it because it is demanding. I did think the boys were going to be better at it, but they aren't! The physical side is fine and I'm doing well.
My two personal heroes are Architect, Artist and Designer Zaha Hadid and Architect and Engineer Julia Morgan. Both have been leaders in their field and trailblazers for women.
I would say go for it. Being a part of a process that creates spaces for people is such a great feeling. Construction is for all, if you enjoy the physical element of building, go for it. if you enjoy designing spaces, go for it. There is a role for any female in construction as long as there is passion!
So, it is clear that the landscape for women in the construction industry is looking positive with role models like Melanie and Rain taking on the challenge to inspire the future workforce.
At Harlow College we offer full-time courses, Apprenticeships and T Levels in a variety of construction trades. For the latest information on Harlow College events and to look at our course offer please go to: www.harlow-college.ac.uk
The HR Team constantly works to improve the range of benefits we offer to staff. Our “20 reasons to work for Harlow College” are detailed below; Whilst there is not enough room here to explain, each of them in detail, here are some details of some essential ones:
Your Holiday Entitlement is listed in your Contract of Employment which could be as much as 42 days per year plus bank holidays for a full time Teacher! Which I am sure you will agree is fantastic! The college holiday year runs from 1st August to 31st July each year and is administered via the HR system. On your first day at the college a member of the HR team will provide training on how to request and book annual leave. In addition to your entitlement the College also allows staff to 'buy' additional leave, and give you a day off on your birthday!
The college offers employees the opportunity to obtain a new bike and cycling equipment through the cycle to work scheme provided by Cycle Solutions. The scheme is supported by the UK Government to promote cycling and enables employees to make big savings on the retail cost of cycles and equipment. The Cycle to Work scheme is a hire scheme, with the cost of the bike and equipment being taken from your monthly salary before National Insurance and Income Tax contributions are deducted.
Every year the college celebrates the success of its staff, through our Staff Awards where you can nominate your peers to recognise their contribution to the college.
We work with our external partner Tusker to bring you this fantastic benefit. As an employee of Harlow College you get to offset some of your salary in exchange for a brand new car.
We want all of our learners to achieve their ambitions, contribute to a positive and productive society and to have happy and purposeful lives. At the core of our intentions are our values:
